Early Signs of Change

June 3, 2014

By Jacinta Hin

How do you know when it’s time to move on to something new?

For most of us, it takes a while before we realise we need a change. It takes  even longer before we’re ready and willing to make a change, busy as we are with maintaining our day-to-day life. We tend to hold on to what we know, even feeling a sense of entitlement to what we have accomplished and put in place. Many of us deliberately choose the comfort of routine over the excitement of a leap into the unknown; the security of a paycheck over the freedom of self-employment; or the companionship of an unloving spouse over the terrifying thought of singlehood.

Often we ignore the early signs of change because we fear the consequences.  Without a doubt, it takes courage to admit that the current situation no longer works and even more courage to take a first step to change that situation. But the fact is, we are always changing. If a change is in the cards, eventually we have to go with it one way or another; in effect, we can either choose to create change or wait until change is forced upon us.

Tune in to the early signs that indicate change to stay a step ahead and take the initiative in your own life. Pay attention to your emotions, since they serve as your compass, pointing to where you are and where you could be heading. Do you find yourself frequently “checking out”, or feeling more alive in your daydreams than in your actual life? Do you feel restless, unsettled or disconnected from your surroundings– lost, even?  Are you envious of others, feeling that you’re left out of or missing out on something? Perhaps you’re bored, tired, low on energy? And how about your reserves of joy, zest and happiness? Are they running low?

Take your thoughts seriously and learn how to distinguish between noise and flashes of insight. Too often we dismiss an epiphany as silly or invalid. Worse yet, we often fail to recognise how our ideas, if acted upon, can change the course of our life for the better.

Signs of change are embedded in every aspect of our life: a friend from the past suddenly showing up, the synchronicity of events, a health challenge forcing you to slow down…..Notice the signs that materialize in your life.

My personal view is this: change is not bestowed upon us by some external force, but the result of what we project into the world from the inside out. Change does not happen to us but it happens from us. We create the circumstances for change, yet we do not always take responsibility or follow up to set the change into motion. Whether or not we act to instigate change is up to us. At any given moment, we can turn the tide of our life simply by listening to the signs that a change is due, and by recognizing that it is we who put the tide into motion in the first place.

Your outlook on the force(s) behind change may differ from mine, but ultimately you and I need to deal with the call for change in the same way.  And so I ask you: what is happening in your life right now? Is it time for a change?
