Let’s Get Lost

October 8, 2013

By Jacinta Hin

Have you ever felt lost, yet confident you would find your way?  You move happily and aimlessly through the days, content to be alive without the need to know what tomorrow will bring.  No goals to keep track of, paths to be found, decisions to be made.  You know the day will come when you have to get your act together, but for now you are blissfully adrift.

We love to get lost in a good book or movie, but the idea of venturing out into life without a map or clear destination, with only our inner compass to rely on, fills us with fear. We hesitate to leave a situation, career or relationship without the security of a new beginning waiting for us, or to open ourselves to the unknowns of change without a plan in place.

Yet sometimes we have to stray for a while so that may find ourselves.

We can always walk the same path, but why not wander off now and then?  Who says that staying on-course is better than flowing off-course?  When life throws us off balance, we do not always need to get back on track as soon as possible. Why not enjoy our periods of limbo in a care-free manner?

It takes courage to go off track. Family and friends worry. Eyebrows will be raised. For sure, you will have plenty of confusing moments. At times, you may even be scared that you’re doomed to drift forever.

But remember that you got lost for a reason. Something about your life was not working, and the more you tried to hold on, the more you became disconnected from yourself. You needed a break, one without an agenda, so that you could move away from whatever it was that led you to become stuck.

To be clueless, in no hurry to know what is next, can be a wonderful and liberating experience, provided we forego judgment and have faith we will find our way when we’re ready.

Furthermore, to roam the woods of life, free of expectations and with no specific place to go to, may bring unexpected opportunities and a renewed appreciation of life. These so-called lost days are actually deeply transformational, although some people might argue you are wasting your time.

In fact, we all should drift a little from time to time to create space for fresh inspiration in our organized lives.

Put your need for answers and control aside for a while and surrender to that joyous feeling of being lost!
