The Waiting Game

November 21, 2012

By Jacinta Hin

We are forever waiting. For something to end or to begin. For inspiration and motivation to propel us into action. For a lover, a better job, more money. For others to change, or make things possible for us. For our problems to go away. We are waiting for our chance, our moment to shine, our purpose to show up.

Waiting is very much part of our DNA.

We often prefer to wait for change rather than do the work required to make it happen. And the longer we procrastinate, the more we feel entitled to our passive stance. Tomorrow always seems a better day to take that first step. And if we wait long enough, perhaps our need for something else may just go away.

We might be scared to talk honestly about how we feel and rather stick it out in our unhappy situations. In our private moments we dream about a better life, but we won’t do anything about it. We choose to wait for things to somehow turn around.

Sometimes we are waiting for something or someone we believe will make our lives more complete. A soul mate, a promotion at work or for our new business to be a success. Sometimes we do not know what we are waiting for, only that something is missing.

But we can only wait for so long. At some point we have to face up to what it is we believe we are waiting for.

Perhaps we need to come into action and start taking steps towards creating a desired outcome.

Perhaps something else is going on. We could be avoiding an issue that needs our attention.

But if we just keep on waiting for something to magically change, we could be putting our life on hold or be giving away our power to create our destiny. We might be living in a future that never comes, missing out on opportunities in the present moment.

Ask yourself these questions:

What am I waiting for?

Is it time to come into action?

How can I explore the deeper issues that may play a role?
